Frost ends mosquito activity, but standing water returns the pressure every spring.

Autumn rodent and wildlife pressure in Delaware City

Tidal marsh around the canal's east end is the whole story here. Marsh edge carries a high resident rodent population through the summer — voles in the cover, mice through the margins — and when the vegetation dies back in October that cover disappears over a couple of weeks. The nearest dry, heated structure is the destination.

Standing water that lingers into autumn keeps Norway rats viable too, because rats need to drink daily where mice can take most of their moisture from food. A property with a damp low spot, a leaking hose bib or a condensate line has a rat problem available to it that a dry property does not.

raccoons and opossums work the same marsh edge and start looking for winter denning space at the same time, usually under decks, sheds and porches before anything tries the roof.
