Pest control in Wyoming

Wyoming is compact and old, with mature street trees and housing that predates most of what surrounds it. Just outside town the land includes orchard and fruit-growing ground, and that proximity shows up plainly in the calls we take from here.

Ripening and fallen fruit is a sugar source, and it draws wasps, yellowjackets and hornets in numbers through late summer. Older homes with wood trim, deep soffits and covered porches then give those same insects sheltered nesting space. Add mature trees over the roofline, gutters that fill with leaves, and framing that has taken decades of weather, and the result is steady pressure from wood-nesting insects and fall invaders.

The street trees are the other constant. Full-grown shade over narrow lots keeps yards cool and damp through the summer, holds mosquitoes later into the evening, and drops enough leaf litter to keep gutters and beds wet well past the last rain.

Common pests in Wyoming, Delaware

Stinging insects lead the list here in a way they do not in most Kent County towns.

Wasps and yellowjackets

Paper wasps build under eaves, porch ceilings and railings. Yellowjackets nest in wall voids, soffits and the ground, and late in the season they turn to fruit and sugar and become aggressive around people. A nest in a wall void has to be treated at the entry, not sealed shut — sealing pushes the colony inward.

Ground bees

Ground-nesting bees use the dry, thin, sandy patches common in older lawns, usually in spring. They are solitary and not defensive, and most of the time they need identification rather than treatment.

Carpenter ants

Old wood trim, porch columns and roof edges that have taken water are where carpenter ants nest here. Overhanging limbs give them a route onto the roof that bypasses the ground entirely.

Stink bugs

Brown marmorated stink bugs are an agricultural pest that overwinters in buildings. Near orchard and crop ground the fall numbers on sunlit walls can be heavy.

When pests show up here

The fruit calendar and the weather calendar overlap through late summer.

• Early spring: ground-nesting bees appear in thin lawn areas. Most need nothing beyond identification.
• March to May: termite swarms in older housing with wood close to grade.
• Late spring to first frost: mosquitoes, held long into the evening under mature tree cover.
• August to October: wasps and yellowjackets are at their most aggressive, working fruit and outdoor food.
• September to November: stink bugs on warm walls, then mice as the nights cool.
• Winter: last season's wasp nests are abandoned and are not reused. Taking an old nest down does not prevent a new one nearby.

Once inside, stink bugs stay dormant in wall voids and attics and reappear on warm winter days. That is not new entry; it is the fall population waking up.

Getting service in Wyoming

Older homes with deep trim and complicated rooflines need the exterior read carefully. Most nesting and most entry happens above eye level.

An inspection covers:

• attic vents, gable ends and window trim for fall invader entry

• lawn and bare soil for ground-nesting bees, plus grade at the foundation
