When pests show up here

Spring tides matter more than rainfall for mosquitoes here. A flood tide that fills the marsh pans produces a brood roughly a week later, whether or not it has rained.

Autumn rodent and wildlife pressure in Lewes

Lewes empties out after Labor Day, and that is exactly what makes autumn its rodent season. A property that was occupied daily in August is checked once a fortnight by October, and a mouse that gets in has weeks of quiet before anybody notices.

The historic housing stock gives them the openings. Eighteenth and nineteenth century sill plates, brick foundations pointed and repointed over two centuries, and crawlspace vents in soft mortar are not sealed the way a modern foundation is, and the gap a mouse needs is smaller than the gap those buildings routinely have.
