• Summer: ants indoors after rain, spiders under decks and eaves, wasps on rail framing.
• September and October: occasional invaders on sunny walls, wasps at their most defensive.
• Winter: rodents in closed rentals, ants persisting under heated slabs.

Ants do not stop here the way they do inland. A heated slab in January is a perfectly good nest site, and January ant calls on Fenwick are not unusual.

Autumn rodent and wildlife pressure in Fenwick Island

There is very little natural rodent habitat on Fenwick itself, which shapes its autumn differently from anywhere inland. What rodents there are came from the buildings and the landscaping, not from fields.

The pressure instead is about the building envelope. Salt air corrodes fixings, wind works vents and skirting loose, and a barrier-island property finishes the season with more gaps than it started with. Mice exploit that in October as the buildings empty and the heat goes off.
